The reason for removing Google Chat is because Google is discontinuing the XMPP chat protocol on its platforms. Microsoft does say that “This update will not impact the connection to your Facebook and/or Google accounts, which means your People page will stay updated with the latest contact information from the services you’ve connected.” Microsoft isn’t giving a reason why Facebook chat is being killed, but it appears that Facebook is ending support for the XMPP protocol as well....

Of course the Internet Explorer home page is set to MSN.com by default, and while users in the U.S. use other browser alternatives like Chrome, Firefox and even Opera, that’s not the case everywhere in the world. While it may not be quite as functional as Sharepoint, the Microsoft Live Groups service is looking better and better especially with the recent launch of the Office 2010 Web Apps on Tuesday. Granted, I still think it’s a long way off before I’d call it a Google Docs/Apps killer; however, I believe the platform is well on it’s way to becoming more than just a party planning tool....

Currently there are questions regarding Microsoft licensing terms for the Windows Desktop included with OnLive Desktop. While the two companies figure it out, if all you want is the ability to work on MS Office Documents, give CloudOn a try. Unlike OnLive Desktop, which provides you with a Windows desktop, CloudOn just provides Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The office apps live in the cloud so you need to be connected to WiFi while using them....

Today Microsoft released Data Protection Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (Sp1.) It’s a big release which is why I thought it was worth a mention this morning. I was jubilant to discover on MicrosoftPost.com that Microsoft has done JUST that! You can find the Download Link for Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 HERE! The Free download is an obvious response to VMWare’s free HyperVisor product ESXi. At first glance, however, it looks like Microsoft needs to streamline the Hypervisor. The download page is showing the Hyper-V Server 2008 download as a WHOPPING 1 GIG! and the Requirements Page says 2 GIG’S for a full install....

Privacy Setting Improvements Microsoft exec Marisa Rogers today announced that today’s build will include new settings for the Inking & Typing and Find My Device features. “For our Windows Insiders who install today’s build, they’ll be able to experience this new set up for the first time. Not everyone will experience the same setup, however. For example, some will review their settings through a single screen set up where selections such as ‘Find My Device’ and’ Inking & typing’ are independent,” writes Rogers....
